Wikia is the host of over 2000 community-focused wikis, including many of the largest public wikis outside of Wikimedia. All Wikia sites are openly editable, advertising supported, and released under a free content license.

The Wikimedia Foundation is the non-profit parent organization of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Funded almost entirely by small public donations, Wikimedia employs only ten staff to run one of the ten most visited websites on the Internet.

PBWorks was started by David Weekly.
The wiki company Schtuff.com, formerly owned by Janrain, merged with PBWiki in March 2007.
The company changed name from PBWiki to PBWorks in May 2009.
